(August 19, 2006) Quotable Doty, part 1 "The PR Release focuses on three USM faculty members, Melody Lo, Sunny Wong, and Frank Mixon. Of these three individuals only one (Mixon, Professor of Economics) remains at USM. Former Assistant Professors Lo (recipient of the infamous “shame on you” comment) and Wong departed USM following the 2005-2006 academic year for (respectively) the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of San Francisco, earning substantial pay increases. "
(August 19, 2006) Quotable Doty, part 2 "So, here’s a hypothetical for you, ... It just so happens that Doty’s wife Susan has some Economic Education experience from Arkansas and will be able to structure seminars and act as lead educator, for pay of course. A board is established from supporters of the MSU and USM business schools, and Freedman and Doty get Board positions. ... It’s a win-win for Doty, who gets vita building activities and a boondoggle for his wife, who can be paid by the MCEE rather than USM, thus avoiding nepotism laws. Perhaps that’s why the three USM professors turned the position down – they knew it involved dirty money."
(August 22, 2006) Quotable Doty, part 3 "Just what has the BBER done in its seventeen month existence? The CoB’s website shows no concrete information regarding the BBER’s non-Economic Education mission, and a Google search reveals no other pertinent hits regarding the BBER. To the best of our ability, the Odds & Ends Department here at usmpride.com cannot find evidence of a single white paper (research paper) produced by the USM BBER. Seventeen months and no progress made toward “[improving] the quality of life for the citizens of South Mississippi and the entire state.” Even sadder is the fact that the BBER’s sole publications consist of charts downloaded from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics’ website and thumbtacked to the Economics department bulletin board with the handwritten scrawl, “Compliments of the USM Bureau of Business and Economic Research.” Now that’s quality research. Of course, QD2 hypothesized on the BBER’s real raison d’être - as the cover for the CEE and the Doty money machine. "
(August 27, 2006) Did Doty Steal PRIDE? Just Ask the Sheriff  Was PRIDE really developed over the course of a year, with input from all those College constituencies mentioned above? Or, did Doty see “PRIDE” on the side of a sheriff’s vehicle while on a trip somewhere, and supplement that find with a 5-minute Google search in order to reduce the overlap from 100% to 80%? It looks to use as though the PRIDE acronym is as old as the hills. Even the students at Mount Baker High School could hardly claim to be the first to use it. It seems to us that Doty lifted it, and without attribution. In doing so, it also seems he violated the CoB’s academic integrity policy.
(August 28, 2006) Was “Developing Careers” a Doty Cut-and-Paste Job? An Investigation into the CoB’s New Mission "Dean Doty told faculty and administration at the University of South Florida that some of his curriculum changes at USM were done with “smoke and mirrors.” He is certainly not averse to having things appear one way when reality points in a different direction. CoB faculty have also come to understand that his attention span is very brief. So, it seems almost implausible that he would spend a lot of time on a single task, such as developing a College motto (see Special Report on PRIDE at usmpride.com) or a Mission for the CoB, even if he states later that months of effort involving many constituencies went into the task."
(August 29, 2006) 31st & Pearl, part 22  Black to Fade When he’s not telling faculty and administrators at other universities that he’s done more to establish a research culture in the CoB than any prior Dean, current Dean Harold Doty is ripping through the last vestiges of Black’s hard work like a man on a mission.  Since Doty’s arrival in 2003, the CoB has experienced a “letter of agreement” promotion to full, a fourth year review, and a number of other untoward movements that have detracted from the base Black built throughout the 1990s.  Where Black operated, at least for a time, like Jerry Maguire, Harold Doty runs the CoB more like Bob Sugar.  Nowadays everything is personal, especially gain.

"The fun money is private money.  At Southern Miss, I've got state dollars and I've got Foundation dollars. It's real easy to tell them apart.  I tell people I've got two checkbooks. I've got my booze account and my non-booze account. Out of the state money I'm pretty constrained what in I can do. ... Foundation dollars, that's when I take my money out of my booze account, I can pretty much do anything I want with it." Click for link to Dr. Doty's Booze Account
... "At Southern Miss, if I can get the university attorney to finally sign off on the contract, we’re getting ready to pay a company called Kintera, they’re a subsidiary of Martz and Lundy. It’s going to cost us about thirty grand to go through and do electronic screening of all our alumni because I want to know how much everybody’s worth. I want to know what the structure of their assets is.  It’s all publicly available so that I need to know for example, I need to know who my hundred wealthiest donors are with a high propensity to give because as dean those are the people I should focus on the most . . ."  (Emphasis added.) (September 18, 2006) Does the “B” Stand for Boondoggle? More Shenanigans in Doty’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research "It’s no secret in the CoB that the Bureau of Business and Economic Research is an empty shell.  There is no staff, there is no activity, there is no ongoing research program, and there is no Gunther, at least not much of the time.  Why is that?  Our investigators believe they have found one source of the inactivity of the BBER.  That source is located near the sunny shores of Pensacola Beach.  That source is the University of West Florida. … Based on what we’ve uncovered to date, the CoB’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research appears to be the greatest invention since the Internet,at least for Harold and Susan Doty (it’s a free-and-clear-from USM income stream) and William Gunther (it’s a 1-course teaching load reduction without extra work). ..."  For more information, see  Quotable Doty, part 2 and part 3.  See also, USM Net Contribution Spreadsheet which pegs Gunther's 2005 USM salary and fringe benefits at $144,000+)
